FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Your paintings look like a photograph! Do you work from photos?
Many of my paintings on this website are created from photographs, but more recently, I have been working on entire compositions from life. Photo references help freeze fleeting moments that I wish to convey in the subject. Whenever possible, I try to gather objects represented in my paintings to study directly in my studio as I work. The photo can only provide up to a certain amount of information. Details can be lost, especially in the shadows. This is where experience and observation enables me to fill in the missing elements. Often times, I will also edit or change something slightly to improve the composition. Most importantly, there's a vibrancy in the colors I use that is not always conveyed in the photographed image.
- How long does it take you to complete a painting?
It depends. The size, subject, and amount of detail involved, all play a roll in the complexities of each painting. In addition, I build up layers of paint which translates into the subject being repainted multiple times. It can be exhausting, but the effects created from this style of painting add a richness, texture, and depth to the overall image. In general, the more detailed the work, the more time it takes to complete...months rather than weeks.
- Do you accept commission work?
Sometimes. As an artist, it is important for me to be inspired by the art that I create. Because of this, I will not necessarily accept each request. Working with a client, I gather information and resources to get a better understanding of the desired project. I will then draft a composition, discuss color, substrate, size, and medium to work within a desired budget. Personal references are helpful, however, I will not duplicate a single photograph. Even with permission, I personally do not feel as though the final artwork is authentic if someone else is the photographer. My goal is to clearly understand the client's needs and then communicate throughout the creative process to insure our visions are aligned.
- How much do your paintings cost?
This depends on the size, materials used, amount of detail, and time invested. A typical 8" x 10" painting can cost between $250-$450. Framing costs can also vary significantly from one painting to another. Please inquire through my CONTACT page for more information.
- Regarding basketball/football prints: Can you make me a print of ____________? (fill in another sport)
It's important to understand that before I can make a print, I must begin with an original work of art. It's a process. If I do not have an interested buyer in the original, I would certainly need to sell a significant amount of prints to warrant the time involved to produce the original. If I decide to produce any other sport paintings, it will be either out of demand or personal inspiration.
- Do you produce any other type of art?
Yes. Through my training as an art educator, I have experience in a variety of mediums such as: pottery, enameling, graphite, oil, stained glass, photography and framing. I've continued to take classes and workshops about various types of art. Painting just happens to be my favorite method. I dapple in different mediums as a way to keep my mind and creativity sharp. Each one informs the other, enhancing problem solving skills as well as my continued personal growth.
- Where can I see your art?
Most of my art is held in private collections. For recent work on display, periodically check EVENTS located on the HOME page. I will update as exhibits change throughout the year. Although this website serves as a portfolio of my work, I truly believe art is meant to be appreciated in real life. I am fortunate to be surrounded by a number of amazing artists when I do exhibit. If not my own work, one can be sure to find inspiration should you take the time to visit!
